A hormonal condition known as polycystic ovarian syndrome or disease (PCOS/PCOD) affects women who are of reproductive age. One in ten women of childbearing age have PCOS, a common health issue that affects teenagers and young women. The complicated interactions of principally five reproductive hormones—estrogen, gonadotropin-releasing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, progesterone, and luteinizing hormone—control the female reproductive system. In women of reproductive age, an imbalance in these hormones causes the hormonal condition known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD). In women of childbearing age, the breakdown of reproductive hormones is a symptom of polycystic ovarian syndrome. Ovaries release excessive quantities of androgen, which mess with how female hormones are controlled (male hormones). This hormonal imbalance causes abundant body hair, acne, hair loss, and irregular or delayed menstrual cycles. A polycystic ovary may not produce enough eggs or fail to mature follicles, which makes it difficult to get pregnant.
